Applying for freelance work on Upwork can be a little tricky, especially if you’re not sure how to write a cover letter.

A well-written cover letter is essential if you want to stand out from the competition and get hired for freelance work. Our guide will teach you how to write an Upwork cover letter that will make potential clients take notice.

I’ll provide tips and examples that will help you create a cover letter that will be professional, compelling, and relevant to the specific job you are applying for.

8 Tips How To Write An Upwork Cover Letter?

When applying for freelance work on Upwork, it’s important to have a well-written cover letter. A cover letter is your opportunity to introduce yourself to potential clients and sell yourself as the best candidate for the job.

Your cover letter should be professional, engaging, and tailored to the specific job you are applying for. In our guide, we will provide tips on writing an Upwork cover letter that will make potential clients take notice.

When writing your cover letter, be sure to include the below tips:

1. Try To Seize The Job Post

When you find a job posting on Upwork that you’re interested in, be sure to read through it carefully before applying. This will help you get a better understanding of what the client is looking for and allow you to tailor your cover letter accordingly.

2. Begin With A Joyful Greeting

When you’re applying for a project, it’s important to start off on the right foot. Begin your cover letter with a friendly and professional greeting.

And also, try to address the client by their first name if you can find it in the job posting. This will show that you are taking the time to personalize your cover letter.

Because calling the client by his name brings a more joyful and personable tone to the cover letter.

3. Be Concise And Clear To The Point

Most freelancers are making mistake of making the proposal lengthy while applying for a job. This makes it boring and as a result, clients neither respond to you.

The proposal must be short, simple, and clear. Because clients are busy with many more applier like you at a time, and they don’t have much time to read long proposals.

Your cover letter should be around 3-4 paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a different aspect of your skills and experience. Be sure to get to the point quickly and avoid rambling.

4. Highlight Your Relevant Skills And Experience

Everyone has their own skills and experiences, so be sure to highlight the ones that are most relevant to the gig you’re applying for.

For example, if you’re applying for a job as a web developer, be sure to mention your experience with coding languages such as HTML, CSS, and javascript.

If you have any relevant work samples or portfolio pieces, be sure to include them as well. Furthermore, you can also mention any relevant coursework or training that you have completed.

5. Ask Questions Related To The Project

When you’re writing a cover letter, it’s important to show that you’re interested in the project and have done your research.

One way to do this is by asking questions about the project. This shows that you are engaged and eager to get started. Asking questions also gives you an opportunity to address any concerns the client may have about your skills or experience.

For example, you could ask about the scope of the project or the client’s expectations.

You could also ask if the client has any specific requirements or preferences. Asking questions shows that you are interested in the project and are willing to put in the work to get it done.

6. Mention Job Directions

Mostly we see in the job post, that a recruiter has added something as a code word or something like that. Which helps him to get rid of the “copy-paste” applier.

I mean for some people writing a proposal is rocket science and they’re afraid of how to write it. In these cases, they are misguided by someone to make one job applying template and send it to every job. But how can he know that it all goes in vain?

I myself have experienced these keywords while applying for a gig. I noticed that the client has mentioned something like “Mention the code word in your proposal.” So, I did it.

And you should also do this if you see similar words from the client in the job post. Because this shows that you have read and understood the job directions carefully.

7. Use A Call-To-Action

A call-to-action (CTA) is a statement that encourages your reader to take some specific action. In the context of a cover letter, a CTA could be something like “I will follow up with you next week to discuss the job further.”

Using a CTA shows that you are interested in the job and that you are taking initiative. It also helps to keep the conversation going and shows that you are eager to work with the client.

8. End With A Polite Salutation

Once you have finished writing your cover letter, be sure to end with a polite salutation such as “Sincerely” or “Thank you for your time.”

This helps to leave a good impression and shows that you are grateful for the opportunity to apply for the job.

Cover Letter Template Samples

How To Write An Upwork Cover Letter

Here I’ll try to mention a few template examples that you can use while making a cover letter.

1. Short And Attractive

One of my favorite working templates is the short and attractive method. In this type of template, you have to focus more on the client’s project rather than your own skills.

I’ve seen that many people make a mistake by writing more about themselves in the proposal. It makes the client feel like you’re trying to promote yourself rather than the project.

So, how can you make it attractive? Follow the below template not to copy.

Hello [Client Name],

[If applicable: Thank you for the job invite. It’s a pleasure to meet you.] I’m delighted to make your acquaintance. [Here are three-four short but pertinent questions about the position. This demonstrates that you’ve read the description and know what you’re talking about, as well as providing an opportunity for the client to begin a conversation with you.]

[Here’s where you’ll need to make a briefcase for yourself. 1-2 sentences that explain why you’d be suitable for this position.]

Best regards,

[Your Name]

I’ve been following this method for so long and believe me, it gives a great result as compared to my other cover letter templates.

2. Engaging And Simple For Newbies

This one is for those who don’t have any experience in freelancing. If you’re a complete newbie and never worked on any platform like Upwork then this cover letter template is for you.

First of all, don’t worry about your lack of experience because everyone has to start from somewhere.

In this template, you have to focus on your skills and try to relate them to the project.

Here’s an example:

Hello [Client’s Name],

[If applicable: Thank you for your invitation.]

[Create a landing page for your screencast and briefly explain what it contains. You want to provide the client with a compelling incentive to click the link and view the material. Describe how much time they will gain as a result of this, as well as any other benefits they will receive.]

[Make sure the cover letter is succinct. Make it a point to explain why the position appeals to you in one or two paragraphs. If you can, explain how the client’s objectives resonate with you personally.]

[1 paragraph sharing an example of your work, ideally closely related to the job you’re applying for.]

If you’re interested in collaborating with me, let’s chat and go into more detail.

Kind regards,

[Your Name]

If you don’t have any experience then this template will help you to get the job.
